RE:    Counting on Howe Sound Educator Placement


We are looking for 4 highly motivated, energetic students in Grade 12 to fill the Marine Educator Work Experience Placement. Students must have completed Bio 11 in order to apply.  This placement will provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience working with marine invertebrates, youth and peers in an educational setting, work on their communication and leadership skills, develop a sense of teamwork and explore career options. Applicants will be accepted based on the student's work experience objectives and personal interests, as indicated in a cover letter, resume, and completed student information form, as well as an in person interview with the School Programs Coordinator.  

Job Description:
·         4 positions available
·         Assist with the preparation, delivery, peer assessment and clean up of the Counting on Howe Sound School Program
·         Enhance participants’ experience through group activities using hands-on,   interactive activity stations and props
·         Help supervise and lead peers and small groups of children during the school program
·         Help supervise the handling of live marine invertebrate animals
·         Possibility to help with animal care and maintenance in the Wet Lab

Skills Required:
·         Currently in Grade 12
·         Student must have completed Biology 11

Skills Preferred:
·         Outgoing, enthusiastic and self-motivated
·         Experience in educating and/or working with children
·         Have participated in leadership training
·         Excellent interpersonal, time management and presentation skills
·         Must be creative, flexible and proactive in problem solving
·         Interested in learning about marine biology and/or education
·         Must be comfortable working with live animals

Commitment: All Thursdays between November 1 and December 20th from 9:00 – 2:30PM          

Mandatory Training: Thursday, November 1 from 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM
Please note:  Students must be able to attend the mandatory training session.
