ALL students in the province of BC must complete a minimum of 30 hours VOLUNTEER, WORK EXPERIENCE or PAID EMPLOYMENT to Graduate. Work experience includes hands-on work experience (business, government, self-employed, non-profit or volunteer organization), job shadowing a worker, career mentoring with a worker, career simulation activities for occupations where hands-on work experience is not available (such as the Fire Fighters Career Day).

Lego Robotics Workshop Leader
January 6 - May 12, 2015
Students with strong
interest in computer programming, robotics, teaching, and/or engineering are
requested to apply. Training will be provided but interest in Lego, computer
programming, model building and/or robotics, and experience working with
children or tweens is an asset.
Responsibilities:
-to mentor the workshop and/or club participants
-assist with maintaining the Lego kits
-prepare the room for workshops
-put equipment away afterward
-plan fun activities
The experience will conclude with working collaboratively to write a brief report on the program that will bring together participant evaluation and your own suggestions.

Tuesdays:Under the supervision of Library staff, Work Experience Students will assist with weekly workshops on Lego Robotics for tweens in grades 5-7.
Thursdays: : Under the supervision of Library staff, Work Experience Students will assist with leading the weekly Lego Club after school. The Lego Robotics Club is for participants who have successfully completed the 4-week workshop and will include students in grades 5-8. .
The City Library will be working with Lego Mindstorm Kits: http://mindstorms.lego.com/en-us/products/default.aspx There will be a training session to get familiar with building and programming using the Lego Mindstorms EV3 kits so no prior experience is required.

Teen Book Buddies - Capilano Library
January 6 - March 3
The North Vancouver District Public Library
is looking for up to 4 Teen Book Buddy Volunteers
- Are in grades 10, 11, or 12
- Enjoy working with younger children, including those with learning disabilities or who are English Language Learners
- Are enthusiastic about reading, and can model reading as an enjoyable activity
- Are patient, supportive, encouraging, and can help younger children stay focussed
- Are able to communicate clearly, effectively and courteously with children, parents, library staff and fellow Book Buddy volunteers
- Are able to keep schedules, notes and statistics
Book Buddies is a Library program that helps children aged 6-11
who need support and encouragement in maintaining and improving their reading
skills. Children are matched with a teen
volunteer, and for ½ hour each week the Book Buddies read aloud to each other,
choose books to take home, and do literacy-based activities such as word games.
Commitment: 22 hours over 2 months: Tuesdays 3:30-6:00 pm, Capilano Library, 3405 Highland Blvd. This includes a two hour training session.

Tech Tutors - Lynn Valley Library
January 22 - March 5
is looking for up to 4 Tech Tutor Volunteers
- Who are in grades 10, 11, 12
- Don’t need to be tech wizards, but are willing to explore a variety of questions
- Are patient, supportive and willing engage and interact with adults and seniors
- Can mentor, support and guide adults in learning digital skills
- Are able to communicate clearly, effectively and courteously with adults, seniors, and library staff
- Are able to keep schedules, notes & statistics; can work together on projects
Tech Tutors is a library program that helps adults explore the library’s
digital resources and provides help with their technology and computer-related questions. Adults are matched with a teen volunteer for
a one-to-one session, during which they will explore whichever question or
topic is of most interest. There may also be the opportunity to work on other
projects, including mapping youth services in the Lynn Valley area.
Commitment: minimum 14 hours over 8 weeks: Thursdays 3:30-5:30 pm, Lynn Valley Library, 1277 Lynn Valley Road. This includes a two hour training session.

Lego Robotics is a library program
co-sponsored by North Shore Community Resources that helps kids learn digital
literacy skills. Working in pairs, and
with the guidance of library staff and teen volunteers, students in grades 5-7
use an online manual and kit to create their own robots from Lego.
Commitment: 12 hours over 6 weeks: Wednesdays 3:30-5:30 pm, Parkgate Library, 3675 Banff Court.
This includes a two hour training session.
