Sutherland Garden - Volunteers


Each month Queensbury students come out to the Sutherland Garden to learn about growing food.   Sutherland Garden needs volunteers teaching Queensbury students when they have their garden sessions. 

Below is a list of the days that Sutherland students can teach out in the garden. 
  • March 10 (9am-12noon)
  • April 14 (9am-12noon)
  • May 12  (9am-12noon)
  • June 9 (9am-12noon)

Interested students must attend an orientation/training on Feb11 and/or 25 or attend a Sutherland Farm Club session (they meet after school every Thursday in the garden).

Reading Buddies Needed at Queensbury Elem

Eco Detectives
Day Camp for Kids in Stanley Park
 
This camp is a wonderful experience to come out and enjoy the forest and beaches of Stanley Park while learning to teach children about the ecology of the Park through games and activities.











For Grade 11 or 12 students who would like to continue their education in Environmental Sciences, Conservation, Public Education and Programming, Teaching, or any related fields.  
 
Looking for students who are:
  • Outgoing
  • Would work well with children
  • Have passion for the great outdoors
40 hours work experience
Students will be supporting a day camp for children ages 7-9

Saturday Lunch Program -NS Neighbourhood House

As a Server/Greeter, your job is:
  • helping in set up
  • take down of tables/chairs
  • serving our guests as they come
  • collecting, washing, sterilizing and putting away of dishes

Research Open House

The Child and Family Research Institute's Research Open House is an interactive morning event that offers high school students Grade 10-12 an opportunity to visit research labs, interact with research trainees and participate in research activities.
 
The next open House is scheduled on March 7, 2016, Monday from 9:00am to 12:30pm at the CFRI 938 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver.
 
  • Students must be nominated by a teacher (see Ms. Virani)
  • Space is limited, each school has only 5 spots.

Teen Volunteers - City of North Vancouver Library

Teen volunteers at the Library are needed for another session of Read Along which will be happening in the New Year.



The City of North Vancouver Library  are looking for teens in grades 8 to 12 who would be interested in volunteering to be a reading buddy for a child in grade 2 to 5.


The teen should able to commit to volunteer with their reading buddy every Wednesday from January 13th through February 24th, 2016 from 4-5pm.
 
Male students are encouraged to apply, it would be a big plus for the library's many reluctant readers who are boys.

Culinary Volunteers

Cook Culture is facilitating cooking classes for the public.  The classes are led by some of Vancouver’s elite chefs and cook volunteers.

What to expect:

Volunteers help with set-up (must arrive 30 minutes before the class) and post-class clean-up. 

As a volunteer, you are essential to the successful operation of our classes. You can expect to stay busy throughout your shift, but you will have opportunities to get to know our chefs, learn some tricks of the trade, and have lots of fun!

Classes:
Run for 3 hours, in total 4 1/2 shift
Weekdays - start at 6pm
Saturday and Sundays - start at 11am

Be a Gene Researcher for a Week in 2016

The Canadian Gene Cure Foundation is looking for mature, capable high school (Grade 11 & 12 students.

You must be:
  • passionate about science and intrigued by genetics
  • have an overall average of at least 85%
  • can write a brilliant essay to demonstrate your excitement about science and your advanced communication skills
  • can convince a teacher to write a stunning reference for you

Gene Researcher for a Week (GRFAW) program is your opportunity to gain insight into the world of genetic diseases through a mentorship in one of Canada’s top genetic labs. This program is designed to provide a learning experience for students that have not had extensive lab experience from other programs or work experience opportunities.

Participants can learn how genes cause human genetic disorders and how top scientists translate these findings into treatments and cures for genetic diseases.

In this program you will participate in the activities in the lab with as much hands on experience as possible*. The GRFAW mentoring program is a great opportunity for YOU to learn about human genetics research and connect with the scientific community.

Eng•Cite Lunch for Grade 10-12 Girls (Nov 28)

 
 
Grade 10-12 girls interested in science and math are invited to attend the Eng•Cite Lunch for an opportunity to talk to and hear presentations by women who are currently studying engineering or young alumnae who are working in the industry.
 
We would like to provide an open forum to enable discussions with and questions to other female students/engineers who were facing a similar decision more recently, and why they chose their path.
