HOW TO GET wex CREDITS.....and a job.

You're looking for a job and it's tough. The resume is kind of weak.....what to do????

Volunteer / Do work experience to fill out the resume and create opportuntities.
WEX will often lead to a job with the employer or maybe with a similar employer because you come with experience.
Employers often contact the school looking for students to do WEX hoping they will find a student with a great work ethic to hire...... See Ms Watson for current employers

So to get started........

If you are volunteering or participating in a work experience...you MUST completed a WORK EXPERIENCE registration form, signed by a parent and submit it to MRS Watson (rm D107)  BEFORE you  start volunteering or participating in a WEX.

You must complete Work safe before you start WEX. See Mrs Watson for details.
If you are in grade 10, Explorer or Science COOP - you have/will complete Worksafe in class.

HOURS completed before the paperwork is submitted will not count as part of the required 100 hours.

i.e.  Sept 10-18 you complete 30 hours.( not counted)
Sept 18 registration form submitted to Mrs Watson
       Sept 21 Work safe completed
Sept 22- First hour worked towards the required 100 hours

Many WEX opportunities must be submitted by a school staff member.i.e. Vancouver Aquarium, Science World etc.    So even though the application is on line, you will send the application to Mrs Watson and she will submit it.

Good Luck!!!

Peggy

Tech Easy.......teach technology to seniors.

Check it out .....Albert is in grade 12 and running Tech Easy!

See Mrs Watson if you want to apply and get WEX credits. Or contact Albert directly on his website.
You could volunteer at the local senior center.

Tech-Easy is a youth-led volunteer organization that encourages high-school youths to help seniors by teaching them how to use computer technology (laptops, iPad, cell phones, and etc.)
What we do is we send groups of youth volunteer to assigned retirement homes, community centres, libraries, and neighbourhood houses across Vancouver and have the youths be responsible for conducting a specific lesson. We offer various lessons ranging from iPad lessons to drop-in styled clinics. The lessons will usually be tailored to the retirement homes' need. Prior to volunteering, we would let our volunteers know which type of lessons they will be leading and how they should proceed.
A new school year has begun! Tech-Easy is also looking for new volunteers to join us! Over the summer, our volunteers have done an incredible job at hosting lessons at many new locations. You can check out our work at www.tech-easy.ca. We have also filmed a video about Tech-Easy and the kind of things we do. You can view it at the link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8kRdiNhD8w.
I saw that your school has a career/ volunteer program for high-school students and I think that it would be an excellent opportunity for the students to join Tech-Easy and help give back to the community. Of course, they can also do it to fulfill extra-curricular activities (acquiring volunteer hours required for school, gaining a new skill/position to put on their resume, and many more.) Volunteering for seniors is something that is very rewarding and I think that the students will like it too :) Please let me know if you might be interested in joining us!

On our website at www.tech-easy.ca we post things like event pictures for new volunteers to get a sense of what it is like volunteering with us! We also have an official Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tech-Easy/312455455470426.

Interested in Politics? Go to Victoria with the YOUTH PARLIAMENT

The British Columbia Youth Parliament’s 85th Parliament will be held in Victoria at the Provincial Legislative Chambers from December 27 to 31, 2013. The Youth Parliament is a province-wide non-partisan organization for young people ages 16 to 21. It teaches citizenship skills through participation in the parliamentary session in December and continuing involvement in community service activities throughout the year. Youth Parliament is a one year commitment.

Students may apply to sit as members of the Youth Parliament. As the Youth Parliament is non-partisan, applicants need only be interested in learning more about the parliamentary process and in serving their community upon return from the Parliament.

Each applicant who is accepted to attend as a member of BCYP must pay a $270 registration fee. Financial support is available for applicants who cannot meet the expense of the registration fee. Requesting financial assistance will not affect an applicant’s chance of being selected as a member. We also provide resources for applicants attempting to secure funding from community sources (see our Join us information page).

Members will sit and debate in the Legislative Chambers for five days and will be accommodated for four nights at the Harbour Towers Hotel in Victoria. During that time, participants are supervised by members of the Board of Directors of the Youth Parliament of B.C. Alumni Society and other youth parliament alumni. In addition, transportation to and from Victoria will be provided for all members who require it.

A soft copy of the application form for British Columbia Youth Parliament is available online by following this link, or visit our Join Us information page for links to the application form, promotional brochure, and poster.

All application forms must be received by October 23, 2013. Applicants will be notified whether they have been selected in early November. If you require more information, please contact me by e-mail or telephone as below, or visit our website at www.bcyp.org.

Debate: Is Insulin Working Hard or Hardly Working?
Wednesday, October 23. 7:00 - 9:00pm
Presented by Scott Covey, Jim Johnson
You will get diabetes if your body stops making insulin. You will also get diabetes if your body becomes resistant to insulin's effects, and in that case your body will make lot of insulin to try to overcome this "insulin resistance." But which came first - high insulin levels or tissues failing to listen to insulin? Join us for a gentlemanly debate on this chicken-and-egg problem.

Beta Cell Suicide and What to Do About It

Beta cells are the workhorses that make and secrete insulin. We used to believe that you were born with as many beta cells as you were ever going to have - but that may not be the whole truth.
