Engineering Explorations

Interested in attending a Lab Tour?

The UBC Mechanical Engineering Department is hosting a guided lab tour to give students an idea of what the MECH department is all about and what kind of research mechanical engineers do.

You will see a variety of demonstrations, presentations, cutting-edge technology, and cool gadgetry! This two hour session will allow you to look inside two MECH labs at UBC.

For those interested, there will be an hour long advising session held after the tour where participants can ask questions about the mechanical engineering department, curriculum, programs, enrollment, and more.

BCIT 1 week Biotechnology Summer Camp

BCIT Biotechnology Dept is offering a
a one week camp


for Grade 10-12 Students

in July or August (Monday-Friday)
9am-3pm


The camp offers:
  • Hands-on biotechnology laboratory experience
  • There will be exercises including working with bacteria, eukaryotic cells, isolating human DNA and plant culturing techniques
  • It will incorporate lesson plans in fun and interactive ways that would familiarize students with the basic biological principals utilized in biotechnologies and also to the component technologies that make up the sector of biotech.

Cost of the camp:  $270/student.

Team up with Genome BC

Geneskool Summer Camp offers a unique opportunity for high school students to learn molecular biology techniques that scientists use every day.

Cathing the Spirit - Outdoor Experience for Youth

Catching the Spirit (CTS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing leadership and social responsibility in youth through environmental awareness and stewardship, outdoor recreation and youth ownership.

Spirit Ranger Program
An afternoon program for youth who wants to experience all that parks have to offer, challenge their creativity and learn new outdoor skills.  A great chance to take the lead with a support team alongside

Project Scanning Technician

The Friends fo the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Society is seeking a detail-oriented individual with an interest in scanning, photography and history to work at the North Vancouver Musuem and Archives for an 8 week-temporary position


Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for scanning pages from World War 1 diaries, photo albums and drawings
  • Will learn to describe and save scans according to the best archival practice
  • Some touch up work and resizing of images with Photoshop may be required

Qualifications:
  • Grade 11 & 12 students (ages 15 and up)
  • Should be reliable, work well with others and have a high degree of computer literacy
  • Ability to follow directions, good attention to detail
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills

 Summer Camp for Grades 10-12

This summer camp is the perfect opportunity for someone who wants to get hands on experience with real forensic techniques.  Gain insight into the educational requirements for entrance into the field of forensics as well as information about programs in BCIT that students can take further their forensics careers.

Hands on Experience:
  • Identifying and packaging evidence from a crime scene
  • Looking for and identifying trace evidence
  • Analyzing DNA using basic lab techniques

Students will get  the opportunity to learn first hand from real, practicing professionals in the following fields:
  • Crime scene investigation
  • Trace evidence analysis

Camp Ignite Mentorship Program (for Grades 11 - 12 Girls)

The North Vancouver City Fire Dept will be sponsoring one girl from North Vancouver to attend the Camp

Camp Ignite Mentorship Program was designed by Metro Vancouver female fire fighters specifically for girls. 

Camp Ignite is a four-day camp that educates and inspires young women through fire fighting activities designed to encourage teamwork, courage commitment, strength of character and health and fitness.  It will help girls realize a future of limitless opportunities and that regardless of gender, anything is possible.


Camp will run from August 7-10, 2014 in the Vancouver Area
Students must grades 11-16 (ages 16-18)
