Great Pumpkin Patch - Looking for 20-30 volunteers

Looking for something fun to earn some of your volunteer hours?
 
Come help us out at Lynn Valley Parent Participation Preschool for our annual "Great Pumpkin Patch" event taking place on Saturday, October 17th
at our school located at 3220 Mountain Highway.

 

 
We are looking for students to help with:

  • face painting

  • the haunted house,

  • various games

  • handing out goodies

 
Shifts are in a minimum of two-hour time slots between 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Soldier for a Day - for G10 to 11 (Dec 5)


For those interested in a little challenge and fun, the Army Reserve is hosting a

Soldier for a Day program
on 5 December 2015
9:30am to 4:00pm

This program is an introduction to the role of the Canadian Armed Forces - Army Reserve both here in Canada and around the world.  It’s also worth 6 1/2 hours of work experience.

Training for Young Enterpreneurs (G10-12)

Run your own Company

JA British Columbia (Junior Achievement of BC) has a great opportunity for grade 10, 11 & 12 students to learn about business!

The program starts Thursday October 15th 2015 and runs until March 3, 2016.

Company Program is the ultimate training ground for young entrepreneurs -showing students what is really involved in creating and running a business. From developing marketing campaigns to deciding how to distribute dividends, your students will have the opportunity to try it all.  The program is sponsored by Junior Achievement and will be facilitated by a team of volunteer business people who are screened and coordinated by JA staff.

This program is an ideal supplement for students currently taking and/or interested in Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Accounting, Economics, or General Business, and for those who want to enhance their Graduation Transition Plan/Portfolio or work experience hours.  It is also an opportunity to learn some basic business concepts for those who do not take a business course at school.

BCIT Biotechnology Career Awareness Program (G10-12)

Attend at BCIT for one week
Workshop A:  December 7-11, 2015
Workshop B:  April 25-29, 2016

 
Workshops include:
  • What is biotechnology?
  • Cell Culture Theory
  • Application of Biotechnology
  • Ethics in Biotechnology
  • Lab work plus industry visits are also part of this program


Eligible students must:
  • Have an expressed interest in science-related curriculum, been enthusiastic about scientific research and lab work, and be interested in learning about careers related to biotechnology. 
  • Be a Grade 10, 11 or 12 student
  • Actively participate in the lab-based workshops and attend all session 
  • Be able to initiate and maintain conversation with practicing professionals at an industry site concerning occupational information and scientific focus
Cost:  $203.02 (cost can be covered by school’s Career Education Grant (please see Ms. Watson (in Foods) if you are unable to pay the fee

Deadline for applying in both workshops is November 6, 2015

  • Mentors and mentees meet once a month from November through June
  • Mentors & mentees plan activities based on their interestes; they might chat over coffee, visit schools, take a fitness class, arrange for job shadowing sessions or enjoy activities that contribute to personal and professional development.

Minerals Ed - Work Experience & SSA Field Trip

MineralsEd is arranging a Secondary Work Experience or SSPA Student Field Trip Thursday, October 15

MineralsEd is Partnering with Mainland Sand & Gravel Ltd. and Rempel Brothers Concrete to run a field trip for Grade 11 & 12 students enrolled in Work Experience or SSA (Secondary School Apprenticeship Program).   


Mainland employs people in a wide range of job - accountants, sales experst, haul truck drivers and HD mechanics.

Rempel employs batchment to mixer drivers, salespeople and trades.

There is no charge for this trip, but a $25 deposit is required to secure a seat. (It will be refunded unless the registrant does not show up on the day of the trip.)

Teacher nomination and parent permission forms must be submitted.   The final deadline for receipt of all  forms is Noon, Oct. 8.

Fresh Air Learning Program Volunteers


Are you interested to work with elementary or preschool-age children?   

This opportunity is ideal for students who'd like to get experience working with children outdoors and who are considering education, child care, or biology/ecology.  

You would working with experienced teachers and children 3-10 years of age, depending on which program you choose.

The programs run Monday-Thursday. 

Training sessions this fall are on September 22nd and 23rd, 3:30-6:00 pm. Volunteers only need to attend one session.
