Aunt Leah's Tree Lots - Volunteers Needed!

Aunt Leah's Tree Lots raises funds to assist youth in foster care, including teen moms, with their transition to independent living. Every year, hundreds of community members volunteer their time to help sell Christmas trees.

Please show your support and have some fun!

This is a great holiday activity to do plus you are earning WEX/Volunteer hours.

 

Volunteer jobs are in:

• customer service/sales
• cashier
• lot maintenance
• set-up and clean-up
• holding trees to show families
• helping load trees to vehicle
• trimming trunks and lower branches

Note: Not everyone has to do heavy lifting! If this is a concern for you, you can sign up to work as cashier or providing customer service.

BCIT - Watch Engineering students in action!

BCIT Engineering Students (Civil, Mechanical and Electrical) are holding a

"Mini-WEC" competition at BCIT

on November 12 at 4:30pm

The Western Engineering Competition (WEC) is an event held annually where engineering students from between western Ontario to Vancouver Island go against each other in various skill testing competitions. At our competition, the biggest thing will be watching design.

Videographer - North Van Wolf Pack Junior Hockey

For hockey fans who are interested in getting volunteer or work experience hours....

 

North Vancouver Wolf Pack, a local junior B hockey team are looking for a VIDEOGRAPHER.  The Wolf Pack live-streams their games online to Fasthockey.net for family, coaches and scouts to look back.

·        Games are at Harry Jerome every Saturday evening (there are occasional Wednesday games but only happen once a month)

·        The job is to film the games (to follow the puck around the rink and film little interviews with a player or two during the first intermission). They have a camera (which is small and simple) and a tripod.

The current videographer (a former Sutherland student) will come to the rink with the student for a game to introduce him to everyone and show him how to use all the equipment.

Special Olympics - Volunteers Needed!

 

Special Olympics are looking for volunteers for 2 meets that they are hosting

 

NOVEMBER 16th (Sunday) -- SWIM MEET

11am - 5pm

·   1-2 to assist with marshaling (organizing athletes into their heats);

·   1-2 result runners (taking results from timers and bringing them to the result booth);

·   1-2 result helpers (preparing ribbons. posting results);

·   1-2 food prep and distribution (distributing snacks out to athletes/volunteers, cutting up oranges/bananas);

·   6 timers.

 

 

 

NOVEMBER 23rd (Sunday) -- 5 PIN BOWLING TOURNAMENT

9:30am-5pm

·   16 experienced scorekeepers

·   1-2 50/50 raffle ticket sellers;

·   1-2 result runners (taking results from scorekeepers to scoring official);

·   1-2 food prep and distribution (shopping for, making & distributing bagged lunches).

The Career Learning Day is a free one-day conference event where young women have the opportunity to interact with professional women in their field, to explore career paths in a field such as business and finance, learn general strategies for career planning, as well as discuss business relationship building and networking. We’ve already had a successful event in Toronto which drew 250 students from a number of private and public schools.

British Youth Parliament - Annual Session (Dec 27)

 

Every year, between December 27th and 31st, 95 representatives of youth organizations from across British Columbia gather at the Provincial Legislature in Victoria for the annual session of BC Youth Parliament.

 

Members sit as independents — not representing any political party and voting with their individual consciences on all issues. Members learn about, and experience firsthand the parliamentary process, debate topics of interest, and plan numerous activities for the upcoming year. After Session, members put these activities and projects into action. Proposed activities are presented in the form of government bills; once passed they're actually put into effect!

Take Our Kids to Work Day - Nov 5

The Learning Partnership's 20th annual Take Our Kids to Work program

 

On Wednesday, November 5, 2014, over 200,000 grade nine students across Canada will spend the day at work, job shadowing a parent, relative, friend or volunteer host.

 

What will students get out of the program?

 

• Develop an appreciation for the importance of staying in school and getting a high school diploma and pursuing post-secondary studies
• Gain exposure to the skills required in today’s workplaces. 
• Develop an appreciation for their parents’ roles in making a living and supporting their families.
• Begin career discussions with adults about the work they do. 
• Gain a better understaind of the complexity of career choices and the benefits of early exploration.
• Explore a careeer options in practical way.

MineralsEd: Quarry and Concrete Tour

WORK EXPERIENCE FOR GRADE 11 & 12

MineralsEd: Cox Station Quarry & Rempel Brothers Concrete Tour October 30, 2014  s

MineralsEd is partnering with Mainland Sand & Gravel Ltd and Rempel Brothers Concrete to run a field trip for Grade 11 & 12 students enrolled in WORK EXPERIENCE or SSAP programs to Cox Station Quarry on Sumas Mountain and the Rempel Brothers Concrete Plant in Abbotsford.   Cox Station produces crushed stone aggregate that is sold locally for large and small construction projects. 

Mainland currently employs 100 people in a wide range of jobs from accountants to haul truck drivers, sales experts and HD mechanics. 

 

Rempel produces ready-mix concrete products that are made with aggregate and used primarily for the residential construction industry.  They employ dozens of people in their operations around the Fraser Valley, from batchmen, to mixer drivers, salespeople and trades.

SD42 teacher Andrew Kowal will lead this trip from Vancouver.   The quarry tour will include: Pit operations, the portable processing plant, the load-out dock on the Fraser River and the machine shops.   The concrete plant tour will include: the stockpiles, batch plant, loader and scale, office and machine shop.

·        Students must be nominated by their teacher and must be enrolled in Work Experience or SSAP
·        Parent/guardian permission is required
·        Transportation from Vancouver and points east is provided
         Depart:  Vancouver PNE Park & Ride, Hastings & Windermere 7:00am sharp
         Pick-up1:  Langley (Colossus Langley Cinemas parking lot) 7:45am
         Pick-up 2: Abbotsford (Whatcom Rd & Hwy1) 8:15 am sharp
         Return: PNE (Vancouver) 4:30p, (earlier for Abbotsford & Langley)
·        Bring your own snacks, water and lunch
·        The tour is largely outdoors.  Dress prepared for fall (cool, wet) weather.

Mt. Seymour - Volunteer Opportunities

 

Seasonal Snow School Volunteer Opportunities

 

Mt. Seymour requires volunteers to assist their professional instructors with lesson programs for skiers and snowboarders ages 4-6. 

 

Program operates from January 12^th to March 6^th on:

-mornings and afternoon during weekends

-daily during the Christmas and Spring Break periods

-evenings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Jan 13 to Mar 10.

 

Qualifications:

•  minimum 15 years old (14 with letter from parent or guardian)

•  intermediate skiing or snowboarding abilities

•  must have ski/snowboard equipment

•  must enjoy working with 4-6 year old children

•  friendly
