MineralsEd is partnering with Mainland Sand & Gravel Ltd and Rempel Brothers Concrete to run a field trip for Grade 11 & 12 students enrolled in WORK EXPERIENCE or SSAP programs to Cox Station Quarry on Sumas Mountain and the Rempel Brothers Concrete Plant in Abbotsford.   Cox Station produces crushed stone aggregate that is sold locally for large and small construction projects. 

Mainland currently employs 100 people in a wide range of jobs from accountants to haul truck drivers, sales experts and HD mechanics. 
 
Rempel produces ready-mix concrete products that are made with aggregate and used primarily for the residential construction industry.  They employ dozens of people in their operations around the Fraser Valley, from batchmen, to mixer drivers, salespeople and trades.

SD42 teacher Andrew Kowal will lead this trip from Vancouver.   The quarry tour will include: Pit operations, the portable processing plant, the load-out dock on the Fraser River and the machine shops.   The concrete plant tour will include: the stockpiles, batch plant, loader and scale, office and machine shop. 

Details:
·        Students must be nominated by their teacher and must be enrolled in Work Experience or SSAP
·        Parent/guardian permission is required
·        Transportation from Vancouver and points east is provided
         Depart:  Vancouver PNE Park & Ride, Hastings & Windermere 7:00am sharp
         Pick-up1:  Langley (Colossus Langley Cinemas parking lot) 7:45am
         Pick-up 2: Abbotsford (Whatcom Rd & Hwy1) 8:15 am sharp
         Return: PNE (Vancouver) 4:30p, (earlier for Abbotsford & Langley)
·        Bring your own snacks, water and lunch
·        The tour is largely outdoors.  Dress prepared for fall (cool, wet) weather.

Mt. Seymour - Volunteer Opportunities




 
Seasonal Snow School Volunteer Opportunities
 
Mt. Seymour requires volunteers to assist their professional instructors with lesson programs for skiers and snowboarders ages 4-6. 
 
Program operates from January 12th to March 6th on:
-mornings and afternoon during weekends
-daily during the Christmas and Spring Break periods
-evenings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Jan 13 to Mar 10.
 
Qualifications:
  minimum 15 years old (14 with letter from parent or guardian)
  intermediate skiing or snowboarding abilities
  must have ski/snowboard equipment
  must enjoy working with 4-6 year old children
  friendly

Lynn Valley Care Centre


Work Experience Opportunity
For Students (age 16 to 18)
 
Lynn Valley Care Centre needs High School Students to volunteer throughout the school year.
 
Students should be interested in helping and working with elderly Residents through visits, doing simple activities or games, doing “Tea Times”, giving mealtime assistance or assist the elderly Residents in various ways or provide “Security” for those in the facility.

Since the processing of the Criminal Record Check takes several weeks, students who are interested in our volunteer program need to be encouraged to get that done promptly. Interview appointments for volunteering at Lynn Valley Care Centre are not made until after the student has received the Criminal Record Check Report back from the police, at which time the student then calls me to set up that appointment.

SUMMER VOLUNTEERS - BOOK BUDDIES


North Vancouver District Public Library

 
Book Buddies is a library program that helps children aged 6-11 who need support and encouragement in maintaining and improving their reading skills. Children are matched with a teen volunteer, and during ½ hour sessions once a week for six weeks the Book Buddies read aloud to each other, choose appropriate books to take home and do literacy-based activities such as word games.

Book Buddies volunteers:

  • Are entering grades 10, 11,or 12
  • Enjoy working with younger children, including those with learning disabilities or who have English as a second language
  • Are enthusiastic about reading, and can model  reading as an enjoyable activity
  • Are patient , supportive and willing to try different ways of engaging children who may be shy or reluctant in a non-judgemental, welcoming environment
  • Are able to communicate clearly, effectively and courteously with children, parents, library staff and fellow Book Buddies
  • Keep schedules, notes and statistics; write reports; operate simple office machinery

Time Commitment:

Lynn Valley Branch           10:00 am – 12:00 pm       Tuesdays          July 8 –August12
Parkgate Branch                10:00 am – 12:00 pm       Wednesdays   July 9 – August 13
Capilano Branch                10:00 am – 12:00 pm        Fridays             July 11- August 15

 
You need to be able to commit to ONE location for at least 4 of the six weeks, and to come to a training session at Lynn Valley Main Library on Thursday July 3 10:00 am-12:00 pm. You can earn up to 14 hours of volunteer work.

Volunteers will rely on library staff for training, supervision, emergency assistance and advice regarding reading selections.

Volunteers must complete a criminal record check.  Please submit a cover letter and resume by June 26 to:

Spend a week at SIGGRAPH


Spend a Week at the biggest, baddest, coolest computer graphics conference/festival/show/extravaganza IN THE WORLD

August 10-14

Vancouver Convention Centre

 

It's FREE, you will have a full week's exposure to the best of computer graphics and interactive techniques, and you get to see and do it all with your very own Pioneer Mentor - an experienced industry pro.

The SIGGRAPH annual conference is the world's largest conference in computer graphics and interactive techniques, now in its 41st year. The Pioneers Mentoring Program was established in 2003, and aims to attract students aged 16+ who may not otherwise consider a career in technology.

 

Students are given a free, full-access pass to the entire week of SIGGRAPH 2014 (a value of nearly $1000), and are connected with a mentor who will work with them before, during and after the conference.

 
Expectations for Selected Students:
  • you need to have at least a C GPA
  • attend a full sampling of SIGGRAPH events.
  • use your mentor to learn more about the conference and the history and direction of computer graphics.
  • write a one to two page summary of your experience and how it's impacted you. You'll send your summary to your mentor.
