RCMP Youth Academy!!

Are you thinking of a career in POLICING,  LAW or even the MILITARY??

Attend a RCMP YOUTH ACADEMY  10 day BOOT CAMP  where you will learn what it takes to be in the police force. Wear the uniform, do drill, role play crime scenarios, learn about the law  AND earn 4 credits for  work experience plus 2 credits for LAW.

Must be 16 by Dec 31.  Application deadline is Dec 5.  Talk to your parents, then get the application in ASAP               Only 50 students from the lower mainland will get this privilege.

GRADE NINES It's TAKE OUR KID TO WORK DAY!

The Learning Partnership's 17th annual Take Our Kids to Work program

On Wednesday, November 2, 2011, over 200,000 grade nine, Senior 1 (Manitoba) and Secondary III (Quebec) students across Canada will spend the day at work, job shadowing a parent, relative, friend or volunteer host.
What will students get out of the program?
 Develop an appreciation for the importance of staying in school and getting a high school diploma and pursuing post-secondary studies.
 Gain exposure to the skills required in today’s workplaces.
 Develop an appreciation for their parents’ roles in making a living and supporting their families.
 Begin career discussions with adults about the work they do.
 Gain a better understanding of the complexity of career choices and the benefits of early exploration.
 Explore career options in practical ways.


Last year 80% of the grade nines at Sutherland Secondary participated in  Take Our Kids to Work Day!!

Apply to volunteer in a Seniors Center with Vancouver Coastal Health or Lynn Valley Care Centre.  Either will give you great exposure to the medical field.

Note-  you must be 19 to volunteer in a hospital and 16 to volunteer in a seniors centre.

Create a RADIO ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Are you a youth(age 14-24)  concerned about discrimination, poverty, a clean environment, your right to participate? Then this program is for you!
Have your voice heard
All participants will receive human rights training, gain leadership skills,and media training. As a group, we will create a set of 30-second radio public service announcements that will be played on radio stations throughout BC about rights-related issues that are important to you.

We will all collaborate to produce a PSA in 3 stages:
1) Record voice and sound
2) Produce the PSA
3) Distribute the PSA to radio stations throughout BC.

This is a 3 day commitment! Participants who complete all 3 days of training will receive a $100 honorarium.
The training will take place during the day on October 22nd, 23rd (Saturday and Sunday) and November 5th.

Join BEST The Beginners Emergency Services Team

The program starts in Oct-  and interviews have started so pick up an application NOW! ( See Ms Giraud in couseling)

Emergency Services of the North Shore is offering the BEST Program- an opportunty for youth to earn WEX credits while training in Emergency Services.
For Gr 11/12 students --you will meet once every 2 weeks as well as volunteer during community events.



Learn about police training and defense tactics, forensic Identification, conflict resolution, duties of fire fighters and paramedics, Hiking Safety, the Motor Vehicle act, drill etc......

Lower Mainland GREEN Team needs volunteers

The lower Mainland Green Team is a group of volunteers who conserve, enhance and protect green spaces throughout the Lower Mainland. Specifically, we remove invasive plants, plant native trees/plants and do clean-ups.

Volunteers are needed for:

Mosquito Creek event on Oct 20th,10am-1pm details here: 

Capilano Regional Park event November 9th,10am-1pm details here: 

  • Instruction and supervision will be provided 
  • Tools, equipment and refreshments will be provided
  • While this event is focused on encouraging youth participation, the event is open to the community
Through this initiative youth will:
  • Conserve and enhance green spaces
  • Learn about environmental issues facing parks
  • Develop stewardship, leadership and teambuilding skills
  • Improve self-esteem
  • Spend time in nature
  • Engage in physical activity
  • Fulfill volunteer hours that are required at school
  • Learn curriculum material in a new way. Teachers are encouraged to help students determine how much invasive plants (e.g. calculate cubic meters) were pulled and teach them about ecology (i.e. plants)

The Biotechnology  Career Awareness Program is one week of  IN LAB work experience at BCIT as well as exploring career options in biotechnology.  
It does mean one week away from Sutherland so you do have to keep your work done here- while attending classes there- but it's worth it!!

MINI MED for students interested in research and medicine

Each year the Chail and Family Research Institute presents oa series of talks on health research. ALthough this is intended for the professionals, high school students are encouraged to attend.
Sutherland can send 2 students in Grade 11 or 12.  This years theme is IMMUNITY
After attending MINI MED you can apply for the summer studentship-working in a research lab for 6 weeks.

For the ladies only!    Discover your future. Explore your career path with the help of a mentor.
Since 1991, the YWCA High School Mentorship program has provided over 1,000 young women with mentors to help them explore career and education options, learn leadership and life skills, gain a positive role model and be better prepared for their futures.
The program matches Grade 11 and 12 female students (mentees) with volunteer professional women (mentors) in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.
