Mini Med School XIV

The Child & Family Research Institute is pleased to present Mini Med School XIV, a 6 part series on Diabetes: Mythology and Modern Research. This series takes place on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm beginning October 9 in the Chan Centre for Family Health Education at the Child & Family Research Institute (938 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver).

Interesting Things You Didn't Know About Type 2 DiabetesWednesday, October 9. 7:00 - 9:00pm
Presented by Dan Metzger, David Meyre, Tim Kieffer
Our introductory series of talks, including how our bodies handle sugar and why,as well as emerging topics in diabetes such as the genetics behind diabetes risk, and how other hormones from your intestines affect how well your insulin works to lower blood sugar.

Where Does My Pancreas Come From?Wednesday, October 16. 7:00 - 9:00pm
Presented by Brad Hoffman, Bill Gibson, Peter Hurley
How your pancreas developed while you were in the womb, how rare pancreas genes contribute to diabetes and what it is like to be a young scientist who also has diabetes.

Debate: Is Insulin Working Hard or Hardly Working?
Wednesday, October 23. 7:00 - 9:00pm
Presented by Scott Covey, Jim Johnson
You will get diabetes if your body stops making insulin. You will also get diabetes if your body becomes resistant to insulin's effects, and in that case your body will make lot of insulin to try to overcome this "insulin resistance." But which came first - high insulin levels or tissues failing to listen to insulin? Join us for a gentlemanly debate on this chicken-and-egg problem.

Beta Cell Suicide and What to Do About It
Wednesday, October 30. 7:00 - 9:00pm
Presented by Dan Luciani, Francis Lynn, Bruce Verchere
Beta cells are the workhorses that make and secrete insulin. We used to believe that you were born with as many beta cells as you were ever going to have - but that may not be the whole truth. Find out how stem cells can help replenish lost beta cells, and how sick beta cells can be brought back from the brink.

Interesting Things You Didn't Know About Inflammation
Wednesday, November 6. 7:00 - 9:00pm
Presented by Rusung Tan, Megan Levings, Clara Westwell-Roper
In this session two of Canada's top immunologists weigh in on how the immune system can help or harm your beta cells. You'll also hear from a talented young scientist on why she chose a career in medicine and diabetes research.

Brand New Concepts in Diabetes

Skills Canada Field Trip....only 40 students get to go.

Sutherland students will have this once in a lifetime opportunity to attend and observe the National Skills Competition.     June 6    9:00-3:00

Started in 1994, the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) remains the only event of its kind in Canada. It is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country. Every year, the event brings together over 500 young people from all regions of Canada, along with their parents and advisors, to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas. The Competition provides an opportunity for young Canadians studying a skilled trade or technology to be tested against exacting standards and against their peers from across the nation. Students vie to win the honour of being crowned the best in their chosen discipline.

Volunteer with Tech Easy- Teaching technology to seniors

Tech-Easy is a volunteer-based community service organization initiated by teenagers who enjoy helping out seniors and playing around with modern technology. Seniors are often put aside when it comes to technological advancements; nevertheless, many of them would like to join the trend but do not have the ideal environment to do so. This is where Tech-Easy comes in. As youths, we have time, passion, and familiarity with computer technologies. Based in Burnaby, B.C., Canada, we visit senior houses and communities regularly to provide free service.
