The Vancouver Aquarium is currently recruiting 16 for our Spring Work Experience Placement. As a work experience student, they will be working within a team of students and staff to create the ultimate visitor experience for all of our visitors this summer. Their days will be filled with fun and varied tasks and they will have the opportunity to engage, amaze and inspire thousands of guests of all ages and from all around the world!

·         Students currently in Grade 10, 11 or 12.
·         Genuine interest in working with the public
·         Strong communications skills
·         Experience with delivering excellent customer service
·         Second language an asset
Please Note: This is not an animal handling position.  Students will have limited contact with marine animals.

2012 Starry Nights ~ Black & White Gala

Sutherland on Saturday, April 14th from 7pm -midnight.


We need up to 20 Grade 11 and/or 12 students  to volunteer

Friday night, helping to set up and decorate,  3:00-9:00

Saturday at the gala    6:30-12:30

Food servers - carrying plates of hors d'oeuvres to the guests and helping to clear tables; Coat check-checking coats and selling bar tickets;
Auction Assistants
Pianist or two for the first 1.5 hrs of the evening
Techies to set up a screen and projector to show the Lip Dub 
Registration Desk to greet guests, take tickets and direct people to reserved tables
Roaming photographer.

Volunteer for the 2012 Starry Nights Black and White Gala Fundraiser

Wanted:

·         Student volunteers are needed to work the 2012 Starry Nights Black and White Gala Fundraiser taking place on the evening of Saturday, April 14th.  If you know of any students in need of volunteer hours, there are flexible shifts available on Friday, April 13th, 3 – 9 pm and/or Saturday, April 14th, 6:30 pm – 12:30 am.  Lots of variety available from set up crew, decorating crew, food servers, auction assistants, photographer, pianist, tech crew, clean up crew, etc…  If you have any interested students, please instruct them to contact the Gala Coordinator via gmail at:  starrynights@sutherlandnetwork.org

TRIUMF for SCIENCE focused students Feb 16- 20



The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)Conference is being held in CANADA for the first time.  It will take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre and is expected to attract between 8,000 to 10,000 scientists from around the world in addition to more than 200 media.  

200 students  will receive a membership in the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) along with free passes to attend the full conference February 16-20, 2012, at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

‘Visitor Experience Gallery Assistant’ Work Experience Placement’


We are looking for 16 highly motivated, energetic students to fill the fall Work Experience Placement.  This placement will provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain interpretation experience, customer service skills, develop a sense of teamwork and explore career options.  Applicants will be accepted based on the student's work experience objectives and personal interests, as indicated in a cover letter and resume, as well as the needs of the Interpretation Department and Visitor Experience Team.  

Job Description:  
·         Admissions Greeter
·         Gallery Greeter
·         Visitor Surveys
·         Info Desk Greeter
·         Gallery Interpretation
·         Touch Pool Interpretation
·         Face painting and crafts

Students will be working within a team of students and staff to create the ultimate visitor experience for all of our visitors during the fall promotion and campaign. Their days will be filled with fun and varied tasks and they will have the opportunity to engage, amaze and inspire thousands of guests of all ages and from all around the world.

Please Note:  This is not an Animal Care placement; students will not be working with marine mammals.

Skills Preferred:
·         Outgoing, enthusiastic and self-motivated
·         Students in Grade 10, 11 or 12
·         Genuine interest in working with the public
·         Strong communications skills
·         Experience with delivering excellent customer service
·         Able to work independently as well as in a team setting
·         Ability to follow instructions

Clara Hughes, Olympic Skater and Cyclist to speak to YOUTH


 Unique Lives & Experiences,     Women’s Lecture Series
 at the Vancouver for the Performing Arts Theatre on Homer St. 
 
Youth are encouraged to attend  March 6 to hear CLARA HUGHES, the  Canadian Olympic cyclist and speed skater,  and the only person to ever win multiple medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics. 
She was named to the Order of Manitoba and as an Office of the Order of Canada.  She is involved with Right to Play, an athlete-driven international humanitarian organization that uses sports to encourage the development of youth in disadvantaged areas.  She has received numerous awards, trophies and accolades in a short span of time, has a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame and was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.  She led the Canadian team as they entered the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Hughes also publically discusses her battle with mental depression and continues speaking about this ‘to open up the dialogue’ for other Canadians struggling with mental illness. Clara has had much to deal with, but kept at it.
