The Child & Family Research Institute is pleased to present Mini Med School XIV, a 6 part series on Diabetes: Mythology and Modern Research. This series takes place on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm beginning October 9 in the Chan Centre for Family Health Education at the Child & Family Research Institute (938 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver).

Our introductory series of talks, including how our bodies handle sugar and why,as well as emerging topics in diabetes such as the genetics behind diabetes risk, and how other hormones from your intestines affect how well your insulin works to lower blood sugar.

How your pancreas developed while you were in the womb, how rare pancreas genes contribute to diabetes and what it is like to be a young scientist who also has diabetes.

Debate: Is Insulin Working Hard or Hardly Working?

You will get diabetes if your body stops making insulin. You will also get diabetes if your body becomes resistant to insulin's effects, and in that case your body will make lot of insulin to try to overcome this "insulin resistance." But which came first - high insulin levels or tissues failing to listen to insulin? Join us for a gentlemanly debate on this chicken-and-egg problem.

A special session on how microbes can influence diabetes risk, followed by our closing discussion and sponsor booths!

Admission is free but space is limited. Registration covers all 6 sessions. For those that are only interested in select presentations all sessions will be recorded and viewable at www.cfri-training.ca within 72-hours.

For students in grades 10-12 interested in attending. Students must be nominated by a teacher to attend this event, students cannot register themselves. Teachers can click on the button to nominate students. Once a nomination has been confirmed both the student and teacher will receive notification via. email.
