SUTHERLAND Career Center

ALL students in the province of BC must complete a minimum of 30 hours VOLUNTEER, WORK EXPERIENCE or PAID EMPLOYMENT to Graduate. Work experience includes hands-on work experience (business, government, self-employed, non-profit or volunteer organization), job shadowing a worker, career mentoring with a worker, career simulation activities for occupations where hands-on work experience is not available (such as the Fire Fighters Career Day).

RCMP Youth Academy - March 2016

This school year the RCMP Youth Academy will again be held around Easter - March 23 to March 31, 2016

It is an eight-day program for Grade 11 and 12 students who aspire to a career in policing. The week-long itinerary is split into three parts – PT (physical training), drill and police theory.


The Academy gives candidates an opportunity to experience police training and to partake in police work simulations.


The RCMP Youth Academy is held at Stillwood Camp and Conference Centre south of Cultus lake in the Columbia Valley at Lindell Beach, B.C.

Create Change - High School Marketing Leadership Program


Are you passionate about social change?

Get coached by Vancouver's best marketing agencies and gain the experience and skills to run an effective marketing campaign that will support hundreds of girls in Ghanna to attend high school. 


Create Change is a program designed to empower high school students to gain confidence and skills so they can fundraise for any cause they are passionate about. 


Who is eligible? Grade 10, 11 and 12 students

Here are a few key program highlights:
  • Students learn from some of the top marketing experts in Vancouver (including experts from the Vancouver School Board, Blink., Lunapads, and booje).
  • Students gain skills in sales, business canvassing, PR, social media, and events, which they apply to raise money for girls their own age in Ghana (and to any other cause they are passionate about!).
  • Students receive professional one-on-one coaching, to help them move through their fears and limiting beliefs, to develop their leadership skills, and achieve their fundraising goals.
  • The program is totally free, and provides all the support students need, requiring no extra support from teachers or schools.
  • Students may receive reference letters, and several of our graduating students have gone on to receive scholarships.

ACE IT Trades Program - Free Tuition Fee!

BCIT are looking for Grade 11 or 12 students for their January, May or September 2016 Intake in the following ACE IT program:


Small Engine Motorcycle Technician
provides students with hands-on training to perform service operations such as unit assembly, full service, repair electrical components, service chassis, wheels, suspensions and accessories.


Auto Service Technician
provides students with hands-on training in electrical systems, air conditioning systems, fuel systems, driveline, engine mechanical, power train, steering and suspension brakes, accessories and computer operated/assisted systems.


Earn credits and get tuition for free, approximately $4,000 savings!!

ACE IT

The Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACE IT) program is the in-class component of a high school apprenticeship. ACE IT students are Youth Apprentices registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA). ACE IT programs are usually offered as partnerships between school districts and post-secondary institutions with onsite training at either location. Students who successfully complete the ACE IT program earn credit towards both high school graduation and a post-secondary credential.  Enrolment in the ACE IT program is free; however, students may be required to cover the cost for textbooks, tools or other items specific to working in a specific industry.

Fire Fighter Career Day (May 12, 2016)

MUST be in grade 11 or 12 --- for Guys and Girls


 Come and play at Fire Fighter for a Day on Thursday, 12th May 2016

and learn all about a career in Emergency Services/First Responders.  

Even if you are thinking of being a paramedic or RCMP, this is for you.

Work Experience Courses ~ WEX12A & WEX12B

WORK EXPERIENCE provides an opportunity for students, explore career options, build employable skills, possibly land their first job, give back to the community, add to their resume, scholarship, university applications and is a great life experience!!

Work experience takes place in the community providing students with an opportunity to explore a career of interest to them. Typically it is a school-arranged, non-paid placement which may lead to an apprenticeship or employment.

Requirement:

1. Complete WorkSafe BC Program (see Mr. Nevison)
2. Meet with the Work Experience Facilitator (Ms. Nieken-Spence) to determine career focus & arrange a placement
3. Complete 30-100 hours of volunteer or work experience
4. Submit a written report

Students may choose to register in the following Career programs:

1. Grade 10 Science COOP = 100 hours of career exploration (Planning 10 and Science 10 are the courses associated with the program. Incorporates WEX12A by allowing students to attend a work placement every Monday and Thursday afternoons, to complete the required 100 hours.

2. Grade 10 Explorer Program = 30 + hours of career exploration (Social Studies & PE Leadership are the courses associated with the program). Includes an opportunity for students to complete the minimum 30 hour Work experience requirement for graduation. Students attend work placement every Thursday afternoon.

3. Grade 11 and/or 12 Work Experience Program = 100 hours of career exploration (can be completed within the timetable of outside of the timetable including summers and other school break times. Register in WEX 12A/12B.

4. SSA (Secondary School Apprenticeship) = 4 courses for a total of 16 credits (can be started as early as age 15/can be done part time or over summer and other school breaks/ can be scheduled as an entire semester outside of the school classroom).

SSA is a career program that allows students to begin an apprenticeship while still in school and earn high school credits for doing so and be eligible for a $1000 scholarship!!

An apprenticeship is a paid training program for trades and technical careers that involves a combination of on the job training and classroom instruction. Register in SSA11a / SSA11b/ SSA12a/ SSA 12b.

5. ACE IT Training = Foundation Level studies in a variety of trades (Cook Level 1 @ Carson Graham / Carpentry @WVSS / other trades at the Post-Secondary Institute – BCIT, VCC, etc)

Hidden Apprentices -- If you are working, you may already be a Secondary School Apprentice.
