SUTHERLAND Career Center

ALL students in the province of BC must complete a minimum of 30 hours VOLUNTEER, WORK EXPERIENCE or PAID EMPLOYMENT to Graduate. Work experience includes hands-on work experience (business, government, self-employed, non-profit or volunteer organization), job shadowing a worker, career mentoring with a worker, career simulation activities for occupations where hands-on work experience is not available (such as the Fire Fighters Career Day).

Work Experience Courses ~ WEX12A & WEX12B

WORK EXPERIENCE provides an opportunity for students, explore career options, build employable skills, possibly land their first job, give back to the community, add to their resume, scholarship, university applications and is a great life experience!!

Work experience takes place in the community providing students with an opportunity to explore a career of interest to them. Typically it is a school-arranged, non-paid placement which may lead to an apprenticeship or employment.

Requirement:

1. Complete WorkSafe BC Program (see Mr. Nevison)
2. Meet with the Work Experience Facilitator (Ms. Nieken-Spence) to determine career focus & arrange a placement
3. Complete 30-100 hours of volunteer or work experience
4. Submit a written report

Students may choose to register in the following Career programs:

1. Grade 10 Science COOP = 100 hours of career exploration (Planning 10 and Science 10 are the courses associated with the program. Incorporates WEX12A by allowing students to attend a work placement every Monday and Thursday afternoons, to complete the required 100 hours.

2. Grade 10 Explorer Program = 30 + hours of career exploration (Social Studies & PE Leadership are the courses associated with the program). Includes an opportunity for students to complete the minimum 30 hour Work experience requirement for graduation. Students attend work placement every Thursday afternoon.

3. Grade 11 and/or 12 Work Experience Program = 100 hours of career exploration (can be completed within the timetable of outside of the timetable including summers and other school break times. Register in WEX 12A/12B.

4. SSA (Secondary School Apprenticeship) = 4 courses for a total of 16 credits (can be started as early as age 15/can be done part time or over summer and other school breaks/ can be scheduled as an entire semester outside of the school classroom).

SSA is a career program that allows students to begin an apprenticeship while still in school and earn high school credits for doing so and be eligible for a $1000 scholarship!!

An apprenticeship is a paid training program for trades and technical careers that involves a combination of on the job training and classroom instruction. Register in SSA11a / SSA11b/ SSA12a/ SSA 12b.

5. ACE IT Training = Foundation Level studies in a variety of trades (Cook Level 1 @ Carson Graham / Carpentry @WVSS / other trades at the Post-Secondary Institute – BCIT, VCC, etc)

Hidden Apprentices -- If you are working, you may already be a Secondary School Apprentice.
