Lego Robotics is a library program
co-sponsored by North Shore Community Resources that helps kids learn digital
literacy skills. Working in pairs, and
with the guidance of library staff and teen volunteers, students in grades 5-7
use an online manual and kit to create their own robots from Lego. The program will run once a week for 5 weeks,
each week building on what was learned the previous week.
The Library is looking for up to 3 Lego
Robotics Volunteers who:
- are in grades 10, 11, 12
- enjoy working with younger children
- are patient, supportive and willing to try different ways of engaging children
- can mentor, support and guide children to learn new skills, without taking over the activity
- can help children focus on the activity and encourage positive behaviours
- are able to communicate clearly, effectively and courteously with children, parents and library staff
Volunteers
must be able to commit to 12 hours over 6 weeks: Wednesdays 3:30-5:30 pm, September 30 through November 4. This includes a
two hour training session.
Volunteers will rely on library staff for training, supervision, emergency assistance and support. All volunteers must complete a criminal record check, and those who complete the 12 hours of volunteer work will receive written confirmation.
