RE: ‘Staying Alive’ Work Experience Placement

We are looking for 10 highly motivated, energetic students to fill the Staying Alive Experience Placement. This placement will provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain teaching experience, communication skills, develop a sense of teamwork and explore career options. Applicants will be accepted based on the student's work experience objectives and personal interests, as indicated in a cover letter and resume, as well as the needs of the School Programs Department.  

Title:  Marine Educator Assistant

Direct Supervisor:  School Program Coordinators

Term of Position: 
  • Mandatory Training: Tuesday January 17th, 2012 from 9am to 2pm

Participate in one full shift per week:
 
·         Thursday: Staying Alive (2 positions)
9:30 – 1:45 Jan 19, 2009- Apr 26, 2012

Or

·         Friday: Staying Alive (8 positions)
9:30 – 1:45 Jan 20, 2009- April 27, 2012

Note:  If students would like to gain more work experience hours, there is an option of extending their placement into June.

Description of Work Experience Opportunity:  Assist School Program Coordinators with the delivery of the “Staying Alive” program to children aged 5-10.  Staying Alive is designed to inspire wonder, curiosity and marine stewardship in students by diving into the colourful world of marine animals.  This program provides students with an extraordinary hands-on opportunity to explore the underwater world by observing, discussing, and touching live aquatic animals in the Aquarium's following galleries: Wild Coast, Tropic Zone and Treasures of the BC Coast.  Through this experience, the students use all their senses to learn about animals and how to identify those with and without backbones.  Marine Educator Assistants will teach small groups of 3-5 students in the Aquarium galleries. 

Skills Preferred: 
·         Experience educating or interacting with children;
·         Outgoing, creative, enthusiastic and self-motivated;
·         Students in grade 10, 11 and 12;
·         Interested in marine biology;
·         High level of professionalism and commitment;
·         Strong English language communication skills.

Work Experience Benefits: 

·         Completion of CAPP hours;

This position helps the Vancouver Aquarium achieve its mission by promoting conservation through education.
