Work experience includes hands-on work experience (business, government, self-employed, non-profit or volunteer organization), job shadowing a worker, career mentoring with a worker, career simulation activities for occupations where hands-on work experience is not available (such as the Fire Fighters Career Day).

Description of Work Experience Opportunity: Assist School Program Coordinators with the delivery of the “Sea Sensations” program to children aged 5-7. Sea Sensations is designed to inspire wonder, curiosity and marine stewardship in students by diving into the colourful world of marine animals. Sea Sensations is the classroom version of our "Staying Alive" School Program and provides students with an extraordinary hands-on opportunity to explore the underwater world by observing, discussing, and touching live aquatic animals and props from the comfort of beyond the Aquarium's busy galleries. The program opens with an interactive puppet show followed by students dividing into smaller groups at the helm of an experienced, friendly and knowledgeable educator to visit a variety of stations with props and live animals. These include: a sea turtle shell, an octopus beak, a shark jaw and live invertebrate animals such as live sea stars, sea urchins and sea cucumbers, among much more. The program concludes with a conservation message and direct action plan for students to do their part in conserving the planet.
Skills Preferred:
· Experience educating or interacting with children; · Outgoing, creative, enthusiastic and self-motivated; · Students in grade 10, 11 and 12; · Interested in marine biology; · High level of professionalism and commitment; |
· Strong English language communication skills.

Description of Work Experience Opportunity:
Assist School Program Coordinator with the delivery of the “Aquatic Adventures” preschool program. This program is designed for preschool aged students (3+) and involves introducing them to marine life and conservation from the safety of the classroom through a variety of hands-on activities including storytelling, games, and a meet and greet with live animals.
The program begins with a puppet show put on by volunteers. In the show, the main character, Otto, a sea otter, finds that the environment he and his friends call home has become polluted and inhabitable. As they set off to find a new home, Otto asks the students to help him find a "suitable" new home exploring the following four themes:
Protection (animal adaptations for survival)
Friends (animals found in the Kelp Forest habitat)
Food (what, how, and how much animals in the ocean like sea otters eat), and
Neighbourhood (the role of marine habitats/ecoystems like the Kelp Forest and the importance of and how to protect them)
As an assistant educator with this program, your main role will involve leading a small group of students through their journey of four stations of planned lessons/activities relating to the above themes. You will also be involved in set-up and clean-up of program materials.

Please Note: This is not an Animal Care placement; students will not be working with marine mammals.

Each placement period will last two weeks. Days off will be staggered throughout the placement.

Job Description:
Assist School Program Coordinators with the delivery of the Climate Change School Program. Our programs are designed to inspire wonder, curiosity and environmental stewardship in students.
This program is a problem-solving "living board game" that challenges groups to work as a team. Students work to find clues, carry their ‘carbon load’ and perform mini-conservation actions. Moving from station to station, students discover where their food and consumer products are produced as well as their hidden carbon costs. The aquarium's Climate Change educators will facilitate team-building, and provide mentoring to students learning about local and global sustainability.
