The Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) is offering an exciting opportunity for 8 to 10 secondary school students to gain volunteer experience and work to restore important habitats in Stanley Park. Time Commitment: March 18th-21st (Monday to Thursday) for 5 hours (10am - 3pm) each day. Duties Volunteers will work as a team over the duration of the week to:
 Remove targeted invasive species from selected areas
 Restore and enhance degraded habitats by planting native vegetation and placing coarse woody debris
 Help to maintain and develop the native plant nursery by weeding and planting cuttings
 Talk with the public about ecology and invasive species in Stanley Park as needed
 Support fellow team members by maintaining a positive attitude and showing dedication while accomplishing tasks Training will be provided on: 
Identification of native and invasive plant species and proper planting techniques  Safe and effective techniques for removing invasive species
 General outdoor safety practices

Gain volunteer experience in environmental conservation while working outdoors  Learn about west coast ecology, local conservation and restoration issues
 Make a difference to conservation and restoration of habitats in Stanley Park

This unique partnership between the North Vancouver School District and Vancouver Community College (VCC) provides a special opportunity for secondary school students to complete their Grade 12 graduation requirements while earning post-secondary credits and certification in the culinary arts industry.

Students acquire job-ready skills in a wide-range of culinary arts. The program covers theory and hands-on cooking practise. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Certificate in Professional Cooking, Level 1.

The Digital Media Academy (DMA) is an enriched hands-on experience that gives students a broad and useful range of skills and knowledge in digital arts, project management, and problem solving.

Important components of the DMA are field trips, guest speakers, workshops and client work that give students contact with media professionals and experience in various settings in the Digital Media Industry. Students will work with organizations such as EA Sports, TEDxVancouver and the Richmond Olympic Oval. Students will have the opportunty to visit EA Sports facilities, including their motion capture studio, and will be taught animation by a staff EA Sports animator.

The DMA is designed for Grade 11 and 12 students who wish to pursue a career path in the applied and academic areas of the Digital Media Industry. Students gain real world experience in digital media art and design, while preparing for entry to college and  university programs such as Art, Design, Animation, Computer Science, Engineering,  Film and Television, Sound Recording, Game Design, Photography and other areas.

The DMA has a close connection with Lower Mainland post-secondary institutions, including SFU School of Interactive Arts & Technology, Capilano University, Think Tank Training Center, and VanArts.

The DMA best suits students who are highly motivated and self-directed learners with a strong interest in art, design, and digital media. Students work in cohorts and take their core courses together in small classes.

Supplemental fees are applicable for NVSD Academies. In 2013–2014, the supplemental fee for the Digital Media Academy is $100 per month. For detailed fee and hardship policy information, contact the school principal.

North Van Library needs BOOK BUDDIES for Spring Break

Spring Break Book Buddies

Book Buddies is a library program that helps children aged 6-10 who need support and encouragement in maintaining and improving their reading skills. Children are matched with a teen volunteer, and during ½ hour sessions the Book Buddies read aloud to each other, choose appropriate books to take home and do literacy-based activities such as word games.

Book Buddies volunteers:

• Are in grades 10, 11,or 12
• Enjoy working with younger children, including those with learning disabilities or who have English as a second language
• Are enthusiastic about reading, and can model  reading as an enjoyable activity
• Are patient , supportive and willing to try different ways of engaging children who may be shy or reluctant in a non-judgemental, welcoming environment
• Are able to communicate clearly, effectively and courteously with children, parents, library staff and fellow Book Buddies
• Keep schedules, notes and statistics; write reports; operate simple office machinery

Book Buddies will run in the mornings during Spring Break. There will also be a 2 hour training session and a 1 hour evaluation session. Volunteers will rely on library staff for training, supervision, emergency assistance and advice regarding reading selections.  All NVDPL volunteers must complete a criminal record check. Volunteers will receive written confirmation of hours completed.

• Have parent/guardian support and permission
• Be willing to attend classes at a different site from your present home school
• Be willing to pay for personal equipment/tools, industry manuals and safety gear as required by program standards
• Be responsible for his/her own transportation arrangements to the program site for the entire length of the program
• Have a Social Insurance and a Personal Education Number
• Meet academic requirements for entry into technical training at a post secondary institution (See Course Selection Booklet)
• Have successfully completed the Workers’ Compensation Board worksite safety test (Certificate attached).
• Understand that the academic requirement to complete this Level 1 program is 70% (50 – 69% earns only high school course credit)

GO8 FREE Visual Arts Program during Spring Break

> GO8 is an introductory visual arts program and internship organized by Satellite Gallery for high-school students from across disciplines in Grades 11 and 12. GO8 is designed to inspire, engage and excite youth to become immersed in Vancouver’s contemporary art world, to work collaboratively, and to create a public art intervention with the group. Final project ideas can include creating a flash-mob event, a temporary public art piece, or a new work for the Gallery’s Seymour storefront window.

> GO8 will meet for five days over the 2013 spring break at Satellite Gallery, in the centre of downtown Vancouver, above CLUB 560. Satellite is shared by three leading public institutions: Presentation House Gallery, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and the Museum of Anthropology at UBC.
> GO8 will be led by a high-school art teacher, senior university students, gallery professionals, and Vancouver-based artists. GO8 will include a public art tour in downtown Vancouver, artist studio visits, workshops, as well as gallery and exhibition tours.
> GO8 is accepting applications from those wishing to broaden their knowledge of the Vancouver art scene while engaging in an exciting collaborative art project. Students who are admitted into the program will also receive 30 hours of work experience credit toward their graduation requirements. Students from disciplines as various as the arts, theatre, and the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
